There is no non-stop flight from Birmingham to Mumbai. Here is how Midlands families get there with one easy stop, or by heading down to Heathrow, and when to book for Christmas.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Birmingham to Mumbai?
No airline flies non-stop from Birmingham Airport to Mumbai. Fly from Birmingham with one stop on a single ticket, with Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Lufthansa via Frankfurt or KLM via Amsterdam. Expect 12 to 16 hours in total. Or travel to Heathrow for a non-stop flight of about 9 hours 20 minutes with Air India, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. For Christmas 2026, book by the end of October.
Is there a non-stop flight from Birmingham to Mumbai?
No. As at 11 October 2026, no airline flies non-stop between Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). That surprises many Midlands families with roots in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Punjab.
Birmingham has strong one-stop links through the Gulf and Europe. The total journey is often only three or four hours longer than the non-stop from London, and you skip the M40 with three suitcases and two tired children.
One-stop flights from Birmingham to Mumbai on a single ticket
All five airlines below fly from Birmingham to their hub and on to Mumbai on one booking. That matters. Bags are checked through, and if the first flight runs late the airline must get you on the next connection.
| Airline | Stop | Typical total journey | Good to know |
| Emirates | Dubai | 12 to 15 hours | Most booked airline on this route. Dubai to Mumbai is only about 3 hours. |
| Qatar Airways | Doha | 12 to 15 hours | Modern, calm hub. Popular with families travelling with young children. |
| Turkish Airlines | Istanbul | 13 to 16 hours | Shorter first leg of around 4 hours, then a longer flight to Mumbai. |
| Lufthansa | Frankfurt | 12 to 15 hours | A very short hop to Frankfurt, then one long flight of roughly 8.5 hours. |
| KLM | Amsterdam | 12 to 15 hours | Similar pattern to Lufthansa. Schiphol is an easy airport to change at. |
Journey times are approximate and depend on the stop. A layover of two to three hours is the sweet spot: time to stretch and eat, but not long enough for everyone to get restless. In the UK winter, Mumbai is five and a half hours ahead, so a morning departure usually lands late at night.
Or travel to Heathrow for the non-stop
Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all fly non-stop from Heathrow to Mumbai in around 9 hours 20 minutes. Virgin Atlantic adds a second daily Mumbai flight from 27 October 2026.
From Birmingham, allow two to three hours to reach Heathrow by car via the M40 and M25, or by train to London Euston and then the Elizabeth line. Add parking or a drop-off and the non-stop often works out at a similar door-to-door time to the one-stop from Birmingham. It is still the right choice for many: elderly parents who want one take-off and one landing, nervous flyers, or families who find connections stressful.
Option | Door to door from the Midlands | Best for |
One stop from Birmingham | 13 to 17 hours | Families in Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Leicester who want to avoid the London drive. |
Non-stop from Heathrow | 12 to 15 hours including the trip to Heathrow | Elderly parents, nervous flyers, anyone already in the south. |

When to book for Christmas and the February half-term
For most schools in England, term ends on Friday 18 December 2026 and starts again on Monday 4 January 2027. Every family wants that two-week window, so seats go first and fares climb through November. Book by the end of October if you can.
The February half-term runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027 in most areas. Fares for that week rise once December passes, so book by early December. Check your own school’s dates, because academies set their own.
1. Fly midweek
Tuesday and Wednesday departures are quieter and usually cost less than the weekend and the days just before Christmas.
2. Stretch the trip at one end
Leave a day or two before term ends, or come back midweek in early January, and you avoid the busiest days in both directions.
3. Compare Birmingham and Heathrow for your exact dates
For a family of four, the difference on a given date can be hundreds of pounds either way.
4. Keep the whole family on one booking
Seats stay together, and if a schedule changes everyone is moved as a group.
5. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Verified students, teachers, lecturers and education staff in the UK get £25 off selected return flights from the UK to India with Mann Travel Offer It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Arriving at Mumbai Terminal 2, and tips for Midlands families
All international flights into Mumbai use Terminal 2. It is large and busy, and many flights land late at night, when immigration queues are longest. A few things make it smoother:
- Have your documents ready before you land. British passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and keep a printed copy of an e-visa with your passport.
- Use the prepaid taxi counter in arrivals if nobody is collecting you. Agree nothing with drivers who approach you in the hall.
- Allow extra time for the last mile. Mumbai traffic is slow at almost every hour, so a home in the south of the city can be well over an hour from the airport.
- Ask us about wheelchair assistance and special meals when you book. Airlines need the request in advance, and it covers Birmingham, the connecting airport and Mumbai.
- Check baggage allowances before you pack gifts. They vary by airline and fare type.
Birmingham Airport sits beside Birmingham International station and the M42, which is why so many of our customers from Coventry, Wolverhampton, Leicester and Solihull prefer it. Coventry is around 25 minutes away, Wolverhampton about 40, and Leicester under an hour. Check the UK government’s India travel advice before you go.
