Flights London to Chennai: Non-Stop and One-Stop Options, Flight Times and When to Book

Flights London to Chennai Non-Stop and One-Stop Options Flight Times and When to Book

Heading home to Tamil Nadu? Here is a plain guide to the airlines, the journey times and the best moment to book.

Quick answer: how do I fly from London to Chennai?
British Airways flies non-stop from Heathrow to Chennai (MAA) every day. The flight takes about 10 hours going out and about 11 hours coming back. Air India takes you via Delhi or Mumbai. One-stop options run through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt and Colombo, usually 13 to 16 hours door to door. For Pongal in mid-January, Christmas and the summer school holidays, book two to four months ahead. Call us on 0208 099 9900 and we will compare them all for you.

Non-stop flights London to Chennai

Chennai is the gateway to Tamil Nadu, and for many families in Southall, Croydon, Harrow and East Ham it is simply home. The good news is that the route is well served.

British Airways is the only airline flying non-stop between London Heathrow and Chennai. BA35 leaves Heathrow around lunchtime and lands at Chennai International early the next morning, local time. The return, BA36, leaves Chennai early in the morning and lands at Heathrow in the early afternoon. It runs seven days a week, and BA uses its larger long-haul aircraft on the route, so economy, premium economy and business cabins are all available.

Air India connects London with Chennai through its hubs. At the time of writing we could not confirm a non-stop Air India service between London and Chennai, so expect to travel via Delhi or Mumbai with a change of plane. It is still a single ticket with checked bags through to Chennai, and it can be good value outside peak weeks.

If you are flying from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh or Glasgow, there is no non-stop to Chennai. A one-stop through the Gulf is usually the simplest option, and our team books those every week.

One-stop options via the Gulf, Europe and Colombo

Non-stop seats sell out first, and they are not always the best value. These are the one-stop routes we book most often for London to Chennai. All of them fly into Chennai airport, code MAA.

When to book flights London to Chennai

Chennai has its own rhythm, and it is a little different from Delhi or Mumbai. These are the dates that fill first.

  • Pongal, 14 to 17 January 2027. Thai Pongal falls on Friday 15 January. Families fly in the week before and return the week after. Book by late October if you can.
  • Margazhi season, mid-December to mid-January. The music and dance season brings a steady stream of visitors, and it overlaps with Christmas. Seats go early. (We cover the season in detail in our Chennai winter holiday post.)
  • Christmas and New Year. English schools break up around Friday 18 December 2026, and the week after is the busiest of the year.
  • Summer holidays, late July to the end of August. Expensive and busy, with an added heat wave waiting for you in Chennai.
  • Diwali, Sunday 8 November 2026. Less intense for Chennai than for the north, but the weeks either side still fill up.

The quiet months are February to early April, and September to mid-November outside Diwali week. Fares are usually calmer and the weather in Chennai is kind. If you are flexible, mid-to-late November is a sweet spot. We have written a separate guide to flights to India in November 2026 from the UK.

6 ways to get a better deal on London to Chennai

1. Book two to four months ahead for peak dates

Pongal, Christmas and summer fares climb as the cheaper seat classes close. The fare you see today is often the lowest you will see for that date.

2. Compare non-stop against one-stop before you decide

The BA non-stop saves three to five hours. On some dates it costs much more than a Gulf connection; on others the gap is small. Ask us for both and choose with the full picture.

3. Fly midweek

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday departures are often cheaper than Friday and Sunday. Returning midweek helps too.

4. Look at nearby airports

If Chennai is expensive, check Bengaluru. Today our homepage shows London Heathrow to Bengaluru from £276 per person, checked 8 October 2026, prices change daily. From Bengaluru, Chennai is a short domestic flight or a comfortable train ride.

5. Students and education staff: use MannPass

If you are a verified student, teacher, lecturer or education staff member in the UK, MannPass takes £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. It is free to join, valid for 30 days, and renewable. It cannot be combined with other offers.

6. Pick the right fare type

The lowest fare is not always the best. If plans may change, a slightly dearer fare with lower change fees can save you money later. We will explain the difference before you pay.

Travelling to Chennai with family

Many of our Chennai bookings are for parents, grandparents and children together. A few practical notes from our team:

  • One booking for the whole family. It keeps seats together and makes changes simpler.
  • Check your documents early. British passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and read the UK government’s travel advice for India.
  • Travelling with elderly parents? Ask us about wheelchair assistance, aisle seats near the toilets, and special meals. Airlines need notice, and we arrange it when we book.
  • Night arrival. The BA non-stop lands in the early hours. Arrange a pick-up before you leave, or ask us about a hotel for the first night.
  • Baggage. Allowances differ by airline and fare. Check before you pack gifts and sweets.
  • Staying on before you head home? We also book hotels in India, including Kerala and the hill stations.
