Flights from Scotland to India: Glasgow and Edinburgh to Delhi, Mumbai and Amritsar

Flights from Scotland to India Glasgow Edinburgh Guide

There is no non-stop flight from Scotland to India. That does not make the journey hard. Here are the three ways Scottish families and students get home, and how to pick the right one.

Quick answer: how do I fly from Scotland to India?

There are no non-stop flights from Scotland to India. From Glasgow or Edinburgh you have three realistic options: a one-stop flight through a Gulf hub such as Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi; a one-stop flight through a European hub such as Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt or Istanbul; or a short flight or train to London Heathrow and a non-stop flight from there. Book on one ticket where you can. Mann Travel quotes Glasgow and Edinburgh fares on request. Call 0208 099 9900.

Why there is no non-stop flight from Scotland to India

Glasgow and Edinburgh are busy airports, but neither has a direct India route. The non-stop UK to India flights leave from London, with a few from Manchester and Birmingham. So every trip from Scotland involves one change somewhere.

The good news is that the one-stop options are frequent and often cheaper than you expect. Families from Glasgow’s south side, from Pollokshields through to Newton Mearns, and from Edinburgh and Leith, make this trip every year. Students at Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Dundee and Aberdeen do it every term. The route is well worn. You just need to choose the pattern that suits your family.

Your three options compared

Here is how the three patterns stack up. Total times are typical ranges, not promises, and depend on the connection on the day.

Route pattern

Legs

Typical total time

Pros and cons

A. Via a Gulf hub
Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Glasgow or Edinburgh to the Gulf (about 7 hours), then the Gulf to India (3 to 4 hours)

13 to 18 hours

One ticket, bags checked through, good choice of Indian cities including Amritsar. Layovers can be long on some days.

B. Via a European hub
Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt or Istanbul

Short hop to Europe (1.5 to 4 hours), then a long flight to India (8 to 9 hours)

13 to 17 hours

Often competitive on price. Fewer Indian destinations than the Gulf hubs. Watch the connection time; a tight European change can be stressful with children.

C. Via London Heathrow
Domestic flight or train, then non-stop

Glasgow or Edinburgh to Heathrow (1.5 hours by air, 4.5 to 5 hours by rail to London), then non-stop to Delhi, Mumbai or Amritsar (8 to 10 hours)

12 to 16 hours

The shortest time in the air and the widest choice of Indian cities. If you book the Scottish leg separately you carry the risk of a missed connection. Ask us to put it on one ticket where we can.

Option by option: what each route feels like

A. The Gulf one-stop

This is the pattern most of our Scottish families pick. Emirates flies from Glasgow and Qatar Airways from Edinburgh, so you leave from your own city in the afternoon, change once, and land in India the next morning. The long leg is behind you before you reach the hub. Amritsar is well served from the Gulf, which matters for Punjabi families in Glasgow.

B. The European one-stop

KLM flies from both Glasgow and Edinburgh to Amsterdam, and other carriers connect through Paris, Frankfurt and Istanbul. The short leg comes first and the long flight second, which suits travellers who want to settle in for the night. Check which Indian cities each hub actually serves before you fall for a fare.

C. Heathrow and a non-stop

If you want the fewest hours in the air, go via London. The catch is the Scottish leg. A separate domestic ticket or a train from Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley saves money, but if it runs late the airline is not obliged to wait or rebook you. We will tell you honestly when a single through-ticket is worth paying a little more for.

6 tips for booking flights from Scotland to India

1. Book on one ticket where you can

A single ticket means your bags are checked through and the airline looks after you if a connection is missed. Two separate tickets look cheaper on screen but you carry the risk.

2. Watch the connection time, not just the price

Two to four hours at the hub is comfortable. Under 90 minutes with children, or over eight hours with grandparents, and the saving stops being worth it.

3. Compare Glasgow and Edinburgh

The two airports are an hour apart by road, and on some dates one is noticeably cheaper for the same hub. Let us price both.

4. Think about which Indian airport you land at

Delhi gives the widest choice. Amritsar saves Punjabi families a long road trip from Delhi. Mumbai is the gateway for the west coast. Sometimes landing one city over and taking a short domestic hop is cheaper. Ask us.

5. Travel outside the Scottish school breaks

Scottish term dates differ from England’s. The October week and Christmas push fares up, and Diwali is busy for everyone. Planning a November trip? Read our guide to Diwali 2026 flights from the UK, which covers Diwali on 8 November and Gurpurab on 24 November in one journey.

6. Students: join MannPass

Verified students and education staff in the UK can join MannPass for £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. It is valid for 30 days and renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.

Travelling with family and elderly parents

Many of our Scottish bookings involve grandparents. A few things we always check:

  • Wheelchair and assistance at the hub. A change of plane is the hard part for older travellers. Request assistance when you book, not at the airport.

  • Special meals and seating together. Put the whole family on one booking so seats stay together across both flights.

  • Baggage allowances. Allowances differ by airline and fare type. Check before you pack gifts, and remember that two separate tickets may mean two separate allowances.

  • Documents. British passport holders need an Indian e-visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website, and check the latest UK government travel advice for India before you fly.
