Cool mornings, soft light and school holidays that line up nicely. Here is how to plan a winter visit to Agra, from the flight into Delhi to that first view at sunrise.
At a glance: how do I plan a Taj Mahal winter trip from the UK?
Fly into Delhi, then take the train or drive to Agra. November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, though December and January can bring fog. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and is closed on Fridays. UK Christmas holidays and February half-term both work well. On 27 September 2026 our homepage showed flights to Delhi from £303 per person (prices change daily).
Why winter is the best time for a Taj Mahal trip
Agra gets very hot from spring into early summer, and then the monsoon arrives. Winter is different. Days are mild and pleasant, which makes walking around the gardens and monuments far more comfortable, especially for children and older parents.
It also fits the UK calendar. Many British Indian families are already heading to India for weddings and family visits over Christmas. Adding two or three days in Agra turns a family trip into something the children will remember for years.
One honest caveat. In December and January, northern India often gets fog in the early mornings, and air quality in the Delhi region can be poor at times. Some sunrise views are misty. Some trains and flights run late. It is still a lovely time to go. Just build in a spare day and keep your plans flexible.
Month by month: which winter window suits you?
Month | What to expect in Agra | Best for |
November | Mild days, cooler nights | Couples, retirees and anyone not tied to school holidays. |
December | Cool, with foggy mornings likely | Families using the Christmas holidays. Book flights early. |
January | Coldest month, fog possible | Travellers who can take time after New Year. Pack warm layers. |
February | Warming up, often clearer | Families using February half-term. Dates vary by council, so check yours. |
Getting from Delhi to Agra
Delhi is the natural gateway. Fly into Delhi, rest for a night with family or at a hotel, then head to Agra.
Gatimaan Express. A fast train from Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin station to Agra Cantt. The journey takes under two hours. It does not run on Fridays, which fits well, because the Taj is closed that day anyway.
Other trains. Several other daily trains link Delhi and Agra. Book ahead in the winter season, as popular trains fill up.
By road on the Yamuna Expressway. A private car or taxi usually takes around three to four hours, depending on traffic. In thick winter fog it can take longer. This is often the easiest option for larger families with luggage.
Many families do Agra as an overnight trip rather than a long day trip. You arrive in the afternoon, rest, and are fresh for an early start.
A simple plan that works for most families looks like this. Day one, land in Delhi and rest. Day two, travel to Agra and settle into your hotel. Day three, see the Taj at sunrise, have a slow breakfast, then explore more of Agra or head back to Delhi. Just make sure day three is not a Friday.
8 tips for your Taj Mahal winter visit
1. Never plan your visit for a Friday
The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday. Build your itinerary around this first.
2. Go at sunrise
The gates open 30 minutes before sunrise. Early mornings are calmer and the light is beautiful, even on a misty day.
3. Stay the night in Agra
A sunrise visit is much easier if you are sleeping nearby, not driving from Delhi in the dark.
4. Keep a spare day
Fog can delay trains and flights in December and January. A buffer day protects your plans.
5. Pack for cold mornings
Winter mornings in Agra can feel surprisingly chilly. Bring warm layers, hats and gloves for the children.
6. Book flights early for Christmas
December is peak season for UK–India travel. Fares usually rise as seats sell, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
7. Students and teachers: use MannPass
Verified students and education staff in the UK get £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India with MannPass. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and can’t be combined with other offers.
8. Sort your visa or OCI in good time
British passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply only through the official Indian visa website.
