Flights from Bristol to India: Gulf and European One-Stops, or Heathrow by Road

Flights from Bristol to India Gulf and European One-Stops or Heathrow by Road

No non-stop flight from Bristol to India? Here are the three ways West Country families and students get home.

Quick answer: how do I fly from Bristol to India?
You have three choices. Fly from Bristol with one stop in the Gulf. Fly from Bristol with one stop in a European hub such as Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt. Or travel to Heathrow by road, around two hours depending on traffic, and take a non-stop flight to Delhi or Mumbai. The right one depends on who is travelling and what fares look like on your dates. Bristol-origin fares are quoted on request, so call 0208 099 9900 and we will compare all three.

No non-stop from Bristol: what that means for you

Bristol Airport is handy for anyone in Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and Gloucester. But it has no non-stop flight to any Indian city, so every trip home involves either a connection or a journey to London first.

That is not a bad thing. One-stop routes are often well priced, and a short break in the middle of a long journey suits many families. The key is to understand the trade-offs before you book, not at the airport.

Three ways to fly from Bristol to India

Here is how the options compare for a typical trip to Delhi or Mumbai. Times are rough guides for a return journey and will vary by airline, connection and date.

Typical total time

Pros and cons

1. Bristol via a Gulf hub

Bristol to a Gulf city, then on to India on the same ticket

About 13 to 17 hours

Start close to home. Wide choice of Indian cities from the hub. Good baggage on many fares. Layover can be long on some dates.

2. Bristol via a European hub

Bristol to Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt, then a long flight to India

About 12 to 16 hours

Short first hop, then one long flight. Often strong on Delhi and Mumbai. Fewer direct links to smaller Indian cities. Connection times can be tight.

3. Road to Heathrow, then non-stop

Car, coach or train to Heathrow, around two hours depending on traffic, then a non-stop to Delhi or Mumbai

About 9 hours in the air, plus the road journey

Shortest flying time and no connection. Widest choice of airlines and dates. You manage the road leg yourself, and parking or a coach ticket adds cost.

Option 1: via a Gulf hub

Fly out of Bristol, change once in the Gulf, and carry on to India. This is the simplest way to start and finish at your local airport. The hubs connect to most Indian cities our customers want, including Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Hyderabad, not just Delhi and Mumbai. Watch the layover length. Two hours is comfortable. Six hours with young children is a long afternoon.

Option 2: via a European hub

A short flight to Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt, then one long overnight flight to India, arriving in the morning. It works best for Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. For smaller Indian cities you may need a domestic connection at the other end.

Option 3: Heathrow by road

From Bristol, Bath or Gloucester the M4 takes you to Heathrow in around two hours depending on traffic. Coaches run from Bristol and Bath too. Once there, you have the full range of non-stop flights to Delhi and Mumbai. If flying time matters most, for example with an elderly parent, this is often the gentlest option in the air.

Keep every leg on one ticket

This is the most important rule for one-stop travel from Bristol. When both flights are on one ticket, the airline is responsible if the first leg is late and you miss the second. They rebook you. Your bags are checked through to India.

Book two separate tickets to save a little and you carry that risk yourself. A delayed Bristol departure could mean buying a new ticket at the airport. We only book one-ticket connections for this reason.

For the Heathrow option, leave a buffer on the road: three hours before departure, more at Christmas and half-term when the M4 is busy.

What fares look like right now

Bristol-origin fares are quoted on request, because the best option changes with your dates and hub. For reference, here are the London return fares on manntravel.co.uk, checked 7 October 2026, per person. Prices change daily.

  • London to Delhi from £303 per person
  • London to Mumbai from £286 per person
  • London to Bengaluru from £276 per person
  • London to Ahmedabad from £219 per person

Use these as a yardstick. A Bristol one-stop may come in close to the London fare on some dates and higher on others. When it is higher, add the cost of getting to Heathrow before you decide. The gap is often smaller than it first looks.

Students at Bristol, UWE and Bath, and education staff across the region, can join MannPass. It takes £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India, is valid for 30 days and can be renewed. It cannot be combined with other promotions.

4 tips for Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and Gloucester families

1. Compare the full cost, not just the fare

For the Heathrow option, add two weeks of parking or return coach tickets for everyone. For a Bristol one-stop, add nothing. Then compare.

2. Book Christmas and half-term early

Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026. February half-term is 15 to 19 February 2027 for most English councils. Both fill early from Bristol, where there are fewer seats. Book in October or November.

3. Check the layover with children in mind

A two to three hour connection is ideal. Long enough to walk about and eat, short enough that nobody melts down.

4. Cardiff and South Wales: compare both airports

Bristol is a short drive across the bridge and often has more choice than Cardiff for India connections. We can price both.

Travelling with elderly parents or young children

Many of our Bristol bookings are for three generations at once. A few things that make the day easier:

  • Ask for wheelchair assistance at booking. It covers the connection airport too, which matters most on a one-stop.
  • Choose the shorter flying time for elderly parents. If the road leg to Heathrow can be done comfortably, a nine-hour non-stop is often the kinder choice.
  • Keep everyone on one booking so seats stay together, and request special meals early.
  • Check documents now. Apply for an Indian visa or OCI card through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and read the latest UK government travel advice for India.
