Two weeks of school holidays, warm evenings and a city that loves a celebration. Here is how to plan a festive fortnight in Mumbai, and how to get there from the UK.
At a glance: Christmas and New Year in Mumbai from the UK
In most of England the autumn term ends on Friday 18 December 2026 and schools return on Monday 4 January 2027, though dates vary by council and school. That gives families a fortnight for Mumbai’s festive season: Christmas lights in Bandra, midnight Mass in historic churches, and New Year’s Eve on Marine Drive. Late December is dry, with temperatures of about 20 to 32°C. Non-stop flights go from Heathrow; one-stop routes serve Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Mumbai fares start from £286 per person on the manntravel.co.uk homepage (checked 12 October 2026, prices change daily). Book early. This is the busiest fortnight of the year.
Why Mumbai works for the Christmas school holidays
For many British Indian families, the Christmas break is the one time of year everyone can travel together. Mumbai makes the most of it. The city has a large Christian community, so Christmas is celebrated openly and warmly, and New Year’s Eve brings the whole city out onto the seafront.
The weather helps. While the UK is cold and dark, late December in Mumbai is dry and bright, with daytime highs in the low thirties and evenings around 20°C. Our earlier guide to Christmas and New Year flights from the UK to India covers the whole country. This one is about Mumbai.
Christmas in Bandra: Hill Road, Mount Mary and midnight Mass
Bandra is where Mumbai’s Christmas is most visible. From mid-December, Hill Road and the streets around Mount Mary are strung with lights, stars and cribs. Houses and lanes in the old East Indian villages, such as Ranwar and Chuim, decorate their own fronts, and evening walks through them have become a tradition for families across the city.
On Christmas Eve, midnight Mass is held at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, better known as Mount Mary, and at Mumbai’s other historic churches, including St Thomas Cathedral in Fort and the Holy Name Cathedral in Colaba. Services are open to all, but they fill early, so arrive in good time if you want a seat. Afterwards, the stalls and bakeries along Hill Road stay busy late into the night with Christmas sweets, marzipan and plum cake.
New Year on Marine Drive and at the Gateway of India
On New Year’s Eve, Mumbai gathers along Marine Drive. The sweep of the promenade, lit by its famous row of street lamps, fills with families and friends waiting for midnight. The Gateway of India and the Colaba seafront are just as popular. Expect crowds, music from nearby hotels and a celebratory mood. Big public events are common on the night, but plans vary from year to year, so check local listings closer to the time rather than relying on any single promised display.
In the daytime, the same area rewards a slow walk. Start at the Gateway of India, head through Colaba Causeway for the shops and cafes, and continue into Kala Ghoda, the art district. From the Gateway, ferries run to the Elephanta Caves, about an hour across the harbour. The caves are closed on Mondays, and the first morning ferries are the calmest.

5 tips for a smooth festive trip
1. Book flights now, not in November
Families who book in October usually get their first choice of dates and airline. Those who wait until late November often pay more and fly on less convenient days. If you can, return midweek after New Year rather than on the weekend.
2. Reserve New Year's Eve dinner early
Hotel dinners and rooftop events for 31 December book out weeks ahead. If you want a table at a hotel on Marine Drive or in Colaba, ask the hotel when you book your room, not when you arrive.
3. Choose your hotel area with care
Bandra puts you close to the Christmas lights. Colaba and Marine Drive put you at the heart of New Year’s Eve. Browse our Indian hotel options, or read our guide to hotels in India for a winter trip from the UK.
4. Enjoy street food, carefully
Mumbai’s vada pav, pav bhaji and bhel puri are part of the trip. Choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh in front of you, stick to bottled water, and go easy on the first day while everyone adjusts.
5. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Verified students and education staff in the UK can join latest offer for £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. Each pass is valid for 30 days and can be renewed. It cannot be combined with other promotions.
Travelling with children and grandparents
- Book everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and any change is simpler to make.
- Ask for assistance at booking. Wheelchair help at Heathrow or the Gulf hub, and at Mumbai, can be arranged in advance. Special meals too.
- Plan the big night around the little ones. Marine Drive at midnight is crowded. With small children, an early evening seafront walk and a hotel celebration may suit better.
- Check documents early. British passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and read the current gov.uk travel advice for India.
