Heading home to India from Yorkshire or the North East? Here are your real options, and when it pays to start from Manchester or London instead.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Leeds Bradford or Newcastle to India?
There are no non-stop flights to India from either airport. From Newcastle, the simplest route is Emirates to Dubai, then one connection on to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and more on a single ticket. From Leeds Bradford, KLM via Amsterdam reaches Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad on one ticket. Many families also take the train to Manchester Airport or Heathrow for more choice. Regional fares vary, so call us on 0208 099 9900 for a quote.
No non-stop flights, but good one-stop choices
Neither Leeds Bradford nor Newcastle has a direct flight to India. Both airports mostly serve short-haul and holiday routes. So every trip home means a one-stop flight on a single ticket, or a journey to a bigger airport first.
That is no problem if you plan it well. A one-stop with a two or three hour connection is often more comfortable than a long drive to Heathrow before a nine-hour flight.
From Newcastle: Emirates via Dubai
Newcastle is the better placed of the two. Emirates flies Newcastle to Dubai daily. In the winter timetable from 25 October 2026 the flight (EK36) leaves around 13:10 and takes about seven hours. It is the only scheduled long-haul service from Newcastle.
In Dubai you connect to Emirates flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and other Indian cities, all on one ticket. Bags are checked through, and if the first flight is delayed, Emirates gets you on the next connection.
This suits families from Newcastle and Sunderland who want to check in once and skip a long train ride with children and luggage.
From Leeds Bradford: KLM via Amsterdam or BA via Heathrow
Leeds Bradford has no long-haul flights at all, so the options are European one-stops.
KLM via Amsterdam. KLM flies Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam, and from there you can fly on to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad on one KLM ticket. Comparison sites list the total journey to Delhi at around 16 hours 40 minutes depending on the connection. Amsterdam is an easy airport to change in.
British Airways via Heathrow. BA has operated a Leeds Bradford to Heathrow service, connecting to BA flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai on a single ticket. Handy if you want Chennai, which KLM does not serve from Amsterdam. Confirm the current Leeds Bradford to Heathrow timetable with us before you plan around it.
For families in Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield and Dewsbury, both routes mean a short drive to the airport. The trade-off is fewer flights per day, so less flexibility if your dates are fixed.
When it is worth travelling to Manchester or Heathrow instead
Manchester has Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad to India, with many connections a day. Heathrow has non-stop flights to Delhi and Mumbai, plus every Gulf carrier.
- Leeds or Bradford to Manchester Airport: about one to one and a half hours by train or car.
- Leeds to Heathrow: LNER to King’s Cross about 2 hours 15 minutes, then the Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express. Allow about four hours door to door.
- Newcastle to Manchester Airport: about two and a half to three hours by train.
As a reference point, fares on our homepage today start from £219 per person to Ahmedabad, £276 to Bengaluru, £286 to Mumbai and £303 to Delhi, all from London, checked 15 October 2026, prices change daily. Christmas holidays 2026: timing and booking windows
Most schools in England break up on Friday 18 December 2026 and go back on Monday 4 January 2027. It is the busiest time of the winter for UK to India flights. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November, so there are two peaks within a few weeks of each other.
Book in October or early November for Christmas travel. The lowest fare classes on regional one-stop routes close early because there are fewer seats. Leave on or before 18 December and come back midweek in early January for more choice.
5 practical tips for the journey
1. Check your connection time
Two to three hours in Dubai or Amsterdam is comfortable. Under 90 minutes with children and grandparents is tight, especially in winter when weather delays the first flight.
2. Know your baggage rules
Allowances differ by airline and fare type. On a one-ticket journey the long-haul airline’s allowance usually applies to the whole trip, but ask us to confirm before you buy gifts for family.
3. Plan your arrival
Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad all have pre-paid taxi counters inside arrivals. Late-night arrivals are common on Gulf routes, so have a bed confirmed for the first night. Late-December mornings in Delhi and Ahmedabad can be foggy, which sometimes delays landings.
4. Sort documents early
British passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Read our OCI card for British citizens guide and check the UK government’s India travel advice before you fly.
5. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Verified UK students and education staff can use Mann Travel Offer for £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. Valid 30 days, renewable, not combinable with other promotions.
For Bradford and Leeds families travelling with grandparents
Many bookings from West Yorkshire are three generations together. A few things make the trip easier:
- Ask for assistance at every airport on the ticket, not just the first one. Amsterdam and Dubai both have good wheelchair services.
- Keep everyone on one booking. It keeps seats together and makes a change simpler if someone falls ill.
- Pack medicines in hand luggage, with a copy of the prescription and a few spare days’ supply.
- Consider Manchester. If grandparents tire easily, a Gulf flight after a short train ride can be the shorter total journey.
