Heading home to Punjab? Here is how to choose between the non-stop and one-stop options, and how to make the trip easy for the whole family.
Quick answer: what is the best way to fly from London to Amritsar?
Air India flies non-stop from London Gatwick to Amritsar about three times a week, taking around 10 hours 30 minutes. On other days, the usual options are one stop via Delhi (Air India from Heathrow, then a short domestic flight) or via a Gulf hub such as Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Non-stop is simplest for families and elderly parents. One-stop routes give you more dates and often a lower fare. Search live fares at manntravel.co.uk/flights or call 0208 099 9900.
Which airlines fly from London to Amritsar?
Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is the main gateway to Punjab. For many families in Southall, Hounslow, Ilford and across London, it is the airport that means home. There are three ways to get there from London.
Route | Airlines (typical) | Stops and journey time |
London Gatwick to Amritsar | Air India | Non-stop. About 10 h 30 m in the air, around three departures a week. |
London Heathrow to Delhi to Amritsar | Air India to Delhi, then a domestic flight | One stop. Typically 13 to 15 hours door to door, depending on the connection. |
London to Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Amritsar | Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad | One stop in the Gulf. Typically 13 to 16 hours, depending on the layover. |

Gatwick or Heathrow? Non-stop or via Delhi?
This is the question we get asked most on this route. The honest answer is that it depends on your dates, your budget and who is travelling.
| Non-stop from Gatwick | Via Delhi from Heathrow | Via the Gulf |
Best for | Families, elderly parents, anyone who wants the simplest journey | Travellers who want to see family in Delhi too, or need dates the non-stop does not fly | Flexible travellers who want more dates and often a lower fare |
Total time | About 10 h 30 m | Typically 13 to 15 hours | Typically 13 to 16 hours |
Watch out for | Only about three departures a week, so book early | The domestic connection. Allow at least three hours if your bags are not checked through | Layovers can run from two to eight hours |
Gatwick suits south London and Surrey. Heathrow suits west London and Southall. If the non-stop is full or the fare is high on your dates, the one-stop routes are a good fallback. Our consultants compare all three in one call.
What do flights London to Amritsar cost?
Fares change every day and depend on the airline, date and fare type. On the Mann Travel homepage today, Amritsar fares were not listed separately. For reference, London Heathrow to Delhi was showing from £303 per person, checked 30 September 2026, prices change daily. Amritsar is a smaller market than Delhi, so non-stop fares are usually higher, especially around Vaisakhi in April, the summer holidays, Diwali and Christmas.

6 tips for booking flights from London to Amritsar
1. Book the non-stop early
With only around three non-stop departures a week, the cheaper fare classes sell out first. If you know your dates, book two to three months ahead. Book even earlier for Christmas, Easter and the summer holidays.
2. Be flexible by a day or two
The non-stop does not fly every day. If you can move your outbound or return by one or two days, you will often find a better fare, or a seat on the non-stop instead of a connection.
3. Compare the total journey, not just the fare
A cheaper one-stop ticket can mean a long layover and a tired family. For elderly parents, the non-stop is often worth a little extra.
4. Check that bags are checked through via Delhi
On a via-Delhi ticket, ask whether your bags go straight through to Amritsar. If not, allow extra time to collect and re-check them in Delhi. Our team confirms this before you book.
5. Ask about seats, meals and assistance when you book
Aisle seats for parents, bulkhead seats for young children, Indian vegetarian meals and wheelchair assistance are all easier to arrange at booking time than at the airport.
6. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Verified students, teachers, lecturers and education staff in the UK can join MannPass for free. It takes an extra £25 off selected return flights from the UK to India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable after each cycle, and cannot be combined with other Mann Travel promotions.
Arriving in Amritsar: the airport, the Golden Temple and getting around Punjab
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is small and easy compared with Delhi. Immigration, baggage and customs usually take under an hour. Prepaid taxi counters are inside the terminal. The airport is roughly 11 km from the city centre, and the Golden Temple is about 30 to 45 minutes away depending on traffic.
Where most of our travellers go next:
Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib). Open around the clock. Early morning and evening are the calmest times. Head coverings are provided and shoes are left at the entrance.
Wagah border ceremony. About 30 km from the city. The flag-lowering ceremony is in the late afternoon, so leave town by early afternoon.
Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Around 1.5 to 3 hours by road or train. Handy for family visits across the Doaba and Malwa regions.
Chandigarh. About four hours by road, or a short domestic flight.
Your village. Many families arrange a car and driver for the whole visit. Ask us how.
Travelling with family and elderly parents
Book everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and changes are simpler.
Request wheelchair assistance at booking. At Gatwick, Heathrow and Amritsar it must be pre-booked with the airline.
Choose the non-stop if you can. One flight, one security check, no connections.
Check baggage allowances before you pack. Air India and the Gulf carriers differ on the number and weight of bags. Sweets, gifts and winter clothes add up quickly.
Sort visas early. British passport holders need an Indian e-visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and read the UK government’s travel advice for India.
Plan for winter fog. December and January can bring morning fog across Punjab and Delhi. Build a spare day into your plans if you have a connection or an event to reach.
