Flying to Mumbai from the North? Here is how the route works, how long it takes, and how to get a fair fare without driving down to Heathrow.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Manchester to Mumbai?
Most flights Manchester to Mumbai involve one stop, usually in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, with a total journey of around 12 to 15 hours. Non-stop services from Manchester to Mumbai have operated in some seasons, so check current schedules for your dates. For Christmas, Diwali or the summer holidays, book two to four months ahead. London–Mumbai fares start from £286 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). Manchester fares are quoted on request. Call 0208 099 9900.
Do non-stop flights from Manchester to Mumbai exist?
Sometimes. Non-stop services from Manchester to Mumbai have operated in some seasons, and schedules change from year to year. So the honest answer is: check current schedules for your dates, or ask us to check. When a non-stop is running, the flight is roughly nine to ten hours, and it is the simplest option for young children or elderly parents.
When there is no non-stop on your dates, you are not stuck. Manchester has strong one-stop links to Mumbai through the Gulf, and the total journey is often only a few hours longer. Many of our northern families prefer a short stop anyway.
Your route options from Manchester Airport
Here are the main ways to get from Manchester to Mumbai. Times are typical and depend on the airline, the connection and the season.
Route | Typical total time | Good for | Watch out for |
Non-stop (when scheduled) | 9 to 10 hours | Young children, elderly parents, short trips | Not always available; sells out first in the peaks |
One stop via Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi | 12 to 15 hours | Most travellers; good value; bags checked through | Overnight legs; some fares have long layovers |
One stop via a European hub | 13 to 17 hours | When Gulf fares are high; daytime connections | Two long flights; tight connections at big airports |
Via Heathrow | 12 to 16 hours plus the journey to London | Combining with a London family visit; non-stop choice | Separate tickets add risk if a flight is delayed |
Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad all fly from Manchester to their home hubs in Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi, with onward flights to Mumbai. These are the routes most of our Manchester customers end up on. Connections are usually two to four hours, and your bags go straight through to Mumbai.
European hubs such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris are worth a look when Gulf fares are high. Flying from Heathrow can also work, but keep the whole trip on one ticket. Separate bookings mean separate problems if the first flight runs late.
How long does the journey take?
Mumbai is five and a half hours ahead of the UK in winter, and four and a half hours ahead during British Summer Time.
A typical one-stop trip leaves Manchester in the early afternoon or evening, lands in the Gulf late at night, and arrives in Mumbai in the early morning or mid-morning, local time. Total time including the connection is usually 12 to 15 hours. Non-stop flights, when they run, take around nine to ten hours.
Coming home, expect a very early departure from Mumbai and an afternoon or evening arrival into Manchester the same day. Plan a quiet first day back.
Arriving at Mumbai: Terminal 2 and onward travel
International flights arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2. It is a large, modern terminal, but immigration queues can be slow in the early morning when several long-haul flights land together. Have your passport and visa or OCI card ready.
From the airport:
- Mumbai suburbs: pre-paid taxis and app cabs wait outside arrivals. Andheri, Borivali, Thane and Navi Mumbai can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on traffic.
- Pune: road transfers take roughly three to four hours by expressway, with private and shared cabs running all day. Short domestic flights are an option too.
- Gujarat: for Surat, Vadodara or Ahmedabad, compare a domestic connection from Mumbai with a direct flight into Ahmedabad instead. Our London–Ahmedabad fares start from £219 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). From Manchester, ask us to price both.
6 tips for northern families and students flying Manchester to Mumbai
1. Price Manchester against Heathrow before you decide
Manchester is on your doorstep if you live in Bolton, Preston, Leeds or Bradford. Occasionally London fares are much lower. Weigh the saving against train tickets and a long day. For a family of four, flying local usually wins.
2. Book early for the peaks
Christmas, Diwali, Easter and the summer holidays fill fast on every route to India. Two to four months ahead is a safe window. Travelling in December? Read our guide to Christmas and New Year flights from the UK to India.
3. Choose your layover carefully
A two to three hour connection is the sweet spot. Very short connections are stressful with children, and very long ones are tiring for elderly parents. If someone in the family struggles with overnight flights, ask us about daytime connections.
4. Ask for assistance when you book
Wheelchair help, special meals and seats together are far easier to arrange at booking than at the airport. Tell us about any mobility needs and we will note them on every leg.
5. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Studying at one of Manchester’s universities, or working in a school or college? MannPass gives verified students and education staff in the UK £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
6. Check your documents early
British passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly, and read the UK government’s travel advice for India before you go.
