Two weeks off school and the whole family wanting to go home. Here is how to plan Christmas flights from the UK to India without paying peak prices for every seat.
At a glance: when should I book Christmas flights from the UK to India?
Book in October if you can. Christmas flights from UK to India are busiest from Friday 18 to Wednesday 23 December 2026, and again on the way back from 2 to 4 January 2027 before schools restart. Fares usually step up through November as seats sell. To pay less, fly out between 12 and 16 December if school allows, return midweek, or stay into the second week of January. Students and education staff get £25 off with MannPass.
Why Christmas is the busiest fortnight on the UK–India route
Most English schools break up around Friday 18 December 2026 and go back around 4 or 5 January 2027. Dates vary by council. That gives families a two-week window, and almost everyone wants to use the same two weeks.
Add Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December (substitute bank holiday Monday 28 December) and New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January, and working parents can stretch the break without using much leave. Airlines know this. As the cheaper fare classes sell, prices step up, and by late November the seats left on popular dates are usually the expensive ones.
Diwali on 8 November and Gurpurab on 24 November come first. For anyone tied to school holidays, though, Christmas is the big one.
Week by week: what to expect from mid-December to early January
Here is how the fortnight usually plays out for UK families flying to India.
| Dates | What is happening | Demand | Our advice |
| 12 to 16 December | Last school week. Business travel winding down. | Moderate | The value window for outbound travel, if school agrees to a few days off. |
| 17 to 23 December | Schools break up around 18 December. Peak outbound rush. | Very high | Book as early as you can. Expect full flights and busy airports. Arrive three hours before departure. |
| 24 to 27 December | Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day. | Mixed | Christmas Day itself is often quieter and better value. |
| 28 December to 1 January | Substitute bank holiday on the 28th, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day. | High | Good week to be in India. Avoid flying on 31 December and 1 January if you want calmer airports. |
| 2 to 4 January | Return rush before schools restart. | Very high | The hardest seats to find. Book the return with the outbound. |
| 5 to 12 January | Schools back. Business travel resumes slowly. | Easing | Returns are often noticeably cheaper. Worth it if the children can miss a day or two, or for parents travelling without them. |
6 ways to pay less for Christmas flights to India
1. Book now, not after Diwali
Every year, people wait until Diwali is done and then look at Christmas. By then the cheaper seats on 18 to 23 December are often gone. Fares usually step up through November. If your dates are settled, book in October.
2. Fly out between 12 and 16 December
Leaving a few days before schools break up can make a real difference to the fare and the airport experience. Talk to your school first. Some will agree to a short absence; others will not. If they do, it is the biggest saving in this guide.
3. Come back midweek, or later
Everyone wants to return on 2, 3 or 4 January. A midweek return, or staying into the second week of January, usually costs less. Use any flexibility you have on the return leg first.
4. Compare one-stop routes with non-stop ones
Non-stop flights sell out first in December. One-stop routes through Gulf or European hubs often have more seats and better prices on the busiest dates.
5. Look at a second Indian city
If Delhi is full or expensive on your dates, check Amritsar, Ahmedabad or Mumbai, then finish with a train or short domestic flight. For a holiday, Goa and Kerala are at their best in December and January.
6. Students and education staff: use MannPass
Home from university for Christmas? MannPass gives verified students and education staff in the UK £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Heathrow, Manchester or Birmingham?
All three work well for Christmas flights from UK to India. Which is best depends on where you live and what you are willing to trade.
- Heathrow has the widest choice, including non-stop flights to Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. London–Ahmedabad starts from £219, London–Bengaluru from £276, London–Mumbai from £286 and London–Delhi from £303 per person (checked 7 October 2026, prices change daily). December fares will be higher than these.
- Manchester suits families across the North. Most flights are one-stop through the Gulf, and fares are quoted on request. Read our full Manchester to Mumbai guide.
- Birmingham is handy for the Midlands, with one-stop options and some non-stop services depending on the season. Fares on request.
Rule of thumb: for a family of four, the local airport usually wins once you add train fares and a long day. For a couple with flexible dates, Heathrow often has the lowest headline fare.
Which Indian city for the Christmas holiday?
Most of our travellers are going home, so the city is decided. If you are choosing, the weather helps.
City | Late December weather | Good to know |
Delhi | Cold mornings and evenings, pleasant days. Fog is common. | Dense fog in late December and January can delay early morning flights. Pack warm layers and allow extra time. |
Mumbai | Warm and dry. The nicest time of year. | Busy with weddings. Book hotels and cabs early. |
Amritsar | Cold, often foggy. Clear days are beautiful. | Same fog advice as Delhi. Allow a buffer on connecting flights. |
Ahmedabad | Mild and dry. | Easy base for Gujarat. Uttarayan kite festival follows in mid-January. |
Goa | Warm, sunny, dry. Peak beach season. | Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year for hotels. Book early. |

Family and practical tips for the Christmas trip
- Book everyone on one booking. Seats together, one set of changes, one person to call if plans shift.
- Travelling with elderly parents? Ask us for wheelchair assistance and special meals when you book, not at the airport.
- Fog in the north. Flying on to Delhi, Amritsar or Chandigarh? Avoid tight connections in late December and January.
- Gifts and baggage. Check your allowance before you shop. Allowances vary by airline and fare type.
- Documents. British passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website early, and check the UK government’s travel advice for India before you fly.
