Flights Manchester to Amritsar: One-Stop Options, Via Delhi, and Tips for Northern Punjabi Families

Flights Manchester to Amritsar One-Stop Options Via Delhi and Tips for Northern Punjabi Families 1

There is no non-stop flight from Manchester to Amritsar. Here is how families across the North actually get there, how long it takes, and when to book.

Quick answer: how do I fly from Manchester to Amritsar?
No airline flies Manchester to Amritsar non-stop. You have three good options. One-stop via the Gulf (for example Qatar Airways through Doha, which flies into Amritsar) takes around 13 to 15 hours door to door. Via Delhi means a flight to Delhi, then a domestic hop of about an hour and a quarter. Or travel to Birmingham for Air India’s non-stop to Amritsar. Manchester and Amritsar fares are quoted on request. Call us on 0208 099 9900.

Why there is no non-stop from Manchester to Amritsar

Thousands of Punjabi families live across Greater Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Preston. Every winter many want to be at Harmandir Sahib for Gurpurab, or home for a wedding. So the question comes up again and again: why can’t we fly straight there?

Airlines put their long-haul aircraft where the numbers are biggest, and Air India has chosen London and Birmingham for its Amritsar non-stops. That may change, and we will tell you the day it does. Until then, a one-stop route or a connection via Delhi is how most Northern families travel, and you still start and finish at Manchester Airport.

Your three options compared

Here is how the main routes stack up for travellers starting in the North. Times are typical and will vary by airline, day and connection.

Option

Typical total time

Best for

Watch out for

One-stop via the Gulf (Manchester–Doha–Amritsar with Qatar Airways, or a similar hub)

About 13 to 15 hours, with a layover of roughly 2 to 4 hours

Families who want to leave from Manchester and land in Amritsar on one ticket

Long overnight sectors. Choose seats together early.

Via Delhi (Manchester–Delhi, then a domestic flight to Amritsar)

About 14 to 18 hours depending on the Delhi connection

Anyone also visiting Delhi, or using a Manchester–Delhi fare

Changing terminals in Delhi. Allow at least 3 hours if the domestic leg is on a separate ticket.

Birmingham non-stop (coach, train or car to Birmingham, then Air India direct to Amritsar)

About 9 hours in the air, plus 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Manchester to Birmingham Airport

Elderly parents and anyone who finds connections tiring

You travel to Birmingham yourself. Read our Birmingham to Amritsar guide.

A fourth choice is Air India’s Gatwick non-stop, covered in our London to Amritsar guide, if you are visiting family down south anyway.

What fares look like right now

Our homepage lead-in fare for the Delhi route today is London to Delhi from £303 per person, one-way from London Heathrow, checked 9 October 2026, prices change daily. Manchester and Amritsar fares are quoted on request. They move with the season, and a one-stop fare in mid-January can look very different from the week before Christmas. Give us your dates and we will come back with real options, usually the same day.

When to fly: Gurpurab, Christmas and the quiet weeks

Two dates shape the winter season for Amritsar flights from the North.

Gurpurab, Tuesday 24 November 2026. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Purab draws huge numbers of families to Amritsar. Seats on the Gulf one-stops and the Birmingham non-stop fill well in advance. Book now and aim to arrive by the weekend before.

Christmas school holidays. Most schools in England break up in the third week of December and return in the first week of January. That fortnight is the busiest of the winter for UK–India travel. See our Christmas and New Year flights guide.

The quiet weeks are the second half of January and February. Punjab is cold and sometimes foggy, but fares are gentler and the Golden Temple is calmer.

5 tips for a smoother Manchester to Amritsar trip

1. Book the whole journey on one ticket

If you go via Delhi, keep the domestic hop on the same booking as the international flight. If a delay makes you miss the connection, the airline rebooks you. On two separate tickets, that problem is yours.

2. Allow for Delhi fog in December and January

Early-morning fog in Delhi can delay winter flights. If you are connecting there, choose a later domestic departure or build in slack. A Gulf one-stop straight into Amritsar avoids the issue.

3. Check baggage on every sector

Long-haul allowances are often generous, but a domestic Indian sector on a separate ticket may allow much less. Confirm before you pack the gifts.

4. Students and education staff: use MannPass

Verified students and education staff in the UK get £25 off selected return flights between the UK and India with MannPass. Each pass is valid for 30 days, can be renewed, and cannot be combined with other promotions.

5. Sort your documents early

British passport holders need an Indian e-Visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. If you hold an OCI card, check it is still valid for your current passport. Our OCI guide for British citizens explains the rules.

Arriving at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport

Amritsar’s airport is small, friendly and about 11 kilometres from the city centre. Most families are at the Golden Temple or at home within 30 to 45 minutes.

  • Immigration. Have your e-Visa printout or OCI card ready with your passport. Queues are short compared with Delhi.
  • Transport. Use the prepaid taxi counter in arrivals, or arrange a pick-up with family. Avoid touts outside.
  • Onward to the villages. Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Batala are all an easy drive. Share your flight number with whoever is collecting you.

Travelling with family from the North

Many of our Northern bookings are three generations at once. A few things we have learnt:

  • Keep everyone on one booking. Seats stay together and any change is one phone call.
  • Elderly parents. Ask us for wheelchair assistance at each airport, including the connection. Many parents prefer a Gulf layover to a nine-hour non-stop.
  • Children. Overnight sectors are easier on little ones. Pack snacks and a change of clothes in the cabin bag.
  • Returning. The weekend after Christmas and the first weekend of January are the busiest return dates. Midweek helps on fare and comfort.
